Glenn Phillips

Glenn Kennon Phillips, 79 of Gulf Breeze, Florida passed away December 4, 2014. Born in Painesville, Ohio on May 9, 1935 the son of Glenn and Winona Phillips. The family then moved to McDonald, Ohio where he attended school. He was a member of the National Honor Society, the Citizens Builders Club, the McDonald marching band and orchestra, the Trumbull County Band, Girard V.F.W, National Champion Band, captain of the McDonald Blue Devils football and basketball teams and manager of the track team. Ken attended Ohio State University where he was a member of the marching band. After attending Ohio State for a year he went to West Point where he played football and was captain of the Army wrestling squad. When he graduated from West Point with a Bachelor in Science in 1958, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. He obtained a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Auburn University in 1970. He is a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College in 1970 and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1977. He served his country as an Air Force bomber pilot, forward air controller and Base Commander of Dyess Air Force Base. His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal with 12 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal and the Republic of Vietnam-Cross of Gallantry. He retired from the Air Force as a colonel in 1985. He and his wife Jeanne moved to Gulf Breeze, Florida to enjoy retirement. He played senior softball for Pensacola, he was a member of the Ohio State University Alumni Marching band and played baritone horn for the Emerald Coast Community Band. Survived by his wife Jeanne Phillips and their combined family of Cheryl Wolff, Ken (Barb) Phillips, Karen (Brian) Scott, George Brenner, Tom Brenner, their combined grandchildren, Jamie Wolff, Dustin Wolff, Ann Rea Phillips, Trey Phillips, Shayne Phillips, Michelle Wallace, Katy (Jordan) McInvale, Kelley Scott. His sister Gayle Phillips and her children Barbara Rich Doug (Jennifer) Boyd. Graveside inurnment service will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at 11:45 AM. in the Barrancas National Cemetery. A reception will follow the service at the Mustin Beach Officers Club on base. Memorials may be made to the charity closest to your heart.
