Alice Dempsey

Alice Myrtle Dempsey, beloved "Aunt Alice" to her family, was born February 21, 1921 in Bathurst, Canada and died on January 2, 2015 at age of 93 in Pensacola, Florida. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; Ida and Palmer Dempsey, brother and sister-in-law; Welman and Martha Dempsey, brother; Ross Dempsey, aunt; Myrtle Miller, and niece; Susan Dempsey Baer. She is survived by her sister-in-law; June Dempsey, nine nieces and nephews and spouses, many grand and great grand-nieces and nephews. Alice immigrated to Boston, Massachusetts at the age of 2. She received a diploma in nursing, Massachusetts General Hospital; Certificate in Public Health Nursing, Simmons College, Bachelors in Science with Distinction, University of Minnesota, Masters of Arts-Social Science with Honors, University of Chicago, Honorary Doctor of Science, Colby-Sawyer College-New London, New Hampshire. She began her career as a visiting nurse in Boston where she rose through the ranks of the Boston Visiting Nurses Association to the position of General Director of the VNA and retired as the Executive Director of the VNA Foundation. Alice received many awards and was recognized nationally as a premier authority on home health care and served on several health care-related Boards of Directors. She received the Boston VNA "Heroes in Home Healthcare Award in recognition of outstanding leadership on behalf of the Agency" on the occasion of her 90th birthday. Alice moved to Pensacola and Azalea Trace in 1989 where she was the first woman President of the Resident's Council and chaired the committee for the development of the Oakbridge Terrace Assisted Living Facility and Heritage Fund. She was a devoted Christian, long time member of Boylston Congregational Church Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts and an Associate Member of St Luke United Methodist Church, Pensacola. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in the honor of Alice Dempsey to, St Luke United Methodist Church - Pensacola, 1394 East 9 Mile Road, Pensacola, FL 32514 or to the Heritage Fund of Azalea Trace, ACTS Mission Foundation, 375 Morris Road, West Point, PA 19486-0090. A Memorial Service will be held in the Azalea Trace Auditorium at 4:00 PM on Friday, January 9, 2015.
