Jack, age 86, passed peacefully surrounded by members of his family on Saturday morning in Pensacola, FL. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Robert and Iva, he was raised in the hills of Kentucky where his father was a farmer and they proudly lived off the land. He began hunting at the age of 9 to help provide food for his family. He joined the Army in 1946 and served for 3 years in logistics. He then enlisted in the Air Force where he proudly served his country for 20 more years. After retirement, he worked for 13 more years for a natural gas pipeline company in Michigan. Upon retirement, he relocated his family to the Gulf Coast, having fallen in love with the area while stationed at Eglin Air Force Base. A loving husband, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Margaret "Joan" (Dunbar) Holt whom he met while stationed in the United Kingdom. He was the proud father of three children, his son Jack and his wife Linh, his daughter Lyn and her husband Philip, his daughter Lea and her husband Dan. He also adored his grandchildren: Devin, Damon, and Juliana, and his step grandchildren, Georgia and Helena. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, rebuilding automobiles, gardening, snowmobiling, and amateur radio. He could build or fix almost anything. He was also a jokester, always trying to make people laugh, and very well known for quirky little sayings his family lovingly termed "Wilburnisms." He will be forever loved and missed. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM Friday May 2, 2014 at Rose Lawn Funeral Home in Gulf Breeze, FL. A service with full military honors will immediately follow. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Emerald Coast Hospice and Comfort Keepers for their assistance with caring for him in his final days.
