In 1935, Virginia Mae Travis was born in North Carolina. She spent her very early years there, and when she was 9 years old her parents divorced and her mother moved them to Long Island, New York. She spent her summers earning extra cash baby-sitting and assumed the role of ‘mother’ to her sisters while their mother worked, a role she continued her entire life. She attended Sunday School and Church and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior.
In her teens, Virginia started racing stock cars, and even when she wasn’t racing she was driving fast (we all know about her lead foot). She met the love of her life, Chuck Taylor, got married and had 5 wonderful children. Chuck was in the military which gave Virginia the role of military wife. She took care of the home and kids, and when Chuck was away she took on his roles as well with the finances. There was nothing she couldn’t do. She was a girl scout troop leader, an excellent cook (I know we all remember her delicious Thanksgiving Feasts). She loved reading, gardening, fishing, sports, and had a long bowling career, where she won several awards and gold medals in the Senior Olympics. There wasn’t a craft or skill she couldn’t conquer. She did cross stitch, embroidery, beading, knitting, quilting, ceramics, and macrame, just to name a few. And she taught several of us how to do them too. While attending Church at Calvary Baptist in Montgomery she was part of the sound crew.
This is just a very small glimpse into what Virginia has accomplished in her 88 years. She was a strong, fiercely loving, hard-working, God-fearing woman and anyone who had the privilege to know her is truly blessed and better for it. She has left a void in our family, but not in our hearts and memories. It is with great love we come together to remember and say good-bye to this “virtuous woman”.
