Verna Whitmore

Verna Dobbins Whitmore 1928 - 2010 Verna Whitmore was born in California, but grew up in Western Colorado, where she completed high school and began college. That summer, she met Bob Whitmore, a recently discharged Navy Veteran of the Pacific War who, like she, became an employee of Montgomery & Ward. By the following year, the couple had become aware of similar interests and decided upon a permanent arrangement, so Verna gave up her college pursuits and went back to Wards, thereby beginning a long and difficult 40 year responsibility in her role as house wife, mother and pillar of support for her husband's efforts in academia; first as a student and then as a teacher and college professor. The Whitmore family came to Pensacola as a result of that pursuit, and Verna took a position at the Pensacola Area of Commerce, which at the time was located on Romana Street where the News Journal is now located. During her nine-year tenure there, she was assigned the task of operating a Better Business department, prior to the establishment of the national agency. She continued support of her husband in his work at Pensacola Junior College and remained in touch with faculty groups and businessmen in the area, even after his retirement. Her final nine years were hindered by a rare crippling ailment which caused her to move about with a walker, or at least a cane, She was a sweet, tough little woman who rose above the resulting hardships and carried on a lively correspondence reflecting concern for others. She is survived by her husband of nearly 62 years, her two sons, Douglas and Ted and Ted's wife Kathleen Bell Whitmore, all of whom she leaves in a state of shock at her sudden and unexpected departure from her family and her host of friends. A Memorial Service will be held at Rose Lawn Funeral Home of Gulf Breeze, Thursday, June 3 at 7pm with visitation one hour prior. Arrangements entrusted to Rose Lawn Funeral Home of Gulf Breeze.
