Verla Jernigan Higgs, 86, of Gulf Breeze passed away on Tuesday, March 20, 2013 at Covenant Hospice. Verla was born on February 7, 1927 in Brewton, Alabama to Ben and Lula Jernigan. She graduated from T.R. Miller High School and worked at the Citizens, Farmers, and Merchants Banks prior to her marriage to Jay Darnell Higgs in 1954. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister Freida Jernigan. She is survived by her daughters Sandra Bailey of Gulf Breeze and Patricia Higgs (Charles) Thomas of Alpharetta, Georgia, granddaughters Katherine Bailey (Timothy) Guglielmo of San Jose, California and Leah Bailey of Gulf Breeze, and sisters Wilma Jernigan McNeill of Montgomery, Alabama and Gloria Jernigan of Gulf Breeze. After the marriage of Verla to Jay D. Higgs, United States Naval pilot, the couple enjoyed several years of Navy life until Lieutenant Higgs was killed in a plane crash. Mrs. Higgs was employed as a teacher's aide and later school secretary at Gulf Breeze Elementary School until her retirement. Mrs. Higgs was a lifetime member of the Community of Christ Church and was also a member of Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church in recent years. Services to celebrate the life of Verla Jernigan Higgs will be held on Monday, March 25 in The Chapel at Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, with visitation at 9:00AM and a service at 10:00 AM led by Evangelists Gary Howard and Donald Baldwin. Interment will be at Barrancas National Cemetery at NAS Pensacola.
