Terry Herrington

Terry Pollard Herrington, 78, of Gulf Breeze, FL, passed away on February 15, 2014, at Baptist Hospital in Gulf Breeze, Florida. Mr. Herrington was born in Augusta, GA, on June 18, 1935, the youngest of eight children of Thomas J. Herrington, Sr., and Carrie Pollard Herrington. He was predeceased by his parents, three brothers: Thomas J. Herrington, Jr., Wilbur T. Herrington and Jack H. Herrington; and three sisters: Ola Herrington Case, Louise Herrington Allen and June Herrington Collins. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Martha Ringson Herrington, two sons, Terry Pollard Herrington, Jr., (Dawn) of Gulf Breeze and Raymond Ringson Herrington (Amy) of Pensacola; a special nephew, Michael Smith (Debbie) of Paducah, KY, and two grandchildren: Raymond Ringson Herrington, Jr., & Sara Louise Herrington; and three great-nephews: Dustin Smith, Travis Smith (Courtney) and Caleb Smith (Jessica), and a sister Carol Herrington Rhodes, Augusta, GA. Many nieces and nephews also survive. He was educated in Columbia County schools and graduated from Evans High School. He attended Middle Georgia College at Cochran, GA. He earned pre-standard, standard and graduate certificates from the American Institute of Banking. He was also a graduate of the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University. He began his thirty-six-year career in banking as a coin wrapper in the head teller's vault at the Citizens and Southern National Bank in Augusta, GA. Terry & Martha moved to Gulf Breeze in April, 1965, where he became Assistant Vice President of the Bank of Gulf Breeze, at that time the only bank in the community. He became the President of the bank in 1970 and, after many mergers and name changes for the bank, retired as Senior Vice President and Senior Lending Officer of Sun Trust Bank with responsibility for the Gulf Breeze and Tiger Point branches. Mr. Herrington was a member of Gulf Breeze Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and as church treasurer. He was a pre-school Sunday school teacher for many years and was moderator and a member of various church committees, including finance, property, administration and, most recently, was the moderator of the witness and service committee. During his banking career, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Gulf Breeze Unit of the American Heart Association, the Santa Rosa County Chamber of Commerce and the Gulf Breeze Rotary Club. He also served as President of the Greater Gulf Breeze Chamber of Commerce. He coached boys' baseball and was a board member and treasurer of the Gulf Breeze Sports Association (GBSA). In retirement, he enjoyed building and flying radio-controlled model airplanes. Funeral Services will be held in the Sanctuary of Gulf Breeze Presbyterian Church on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Chaplain Robert Price is officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall. Pallbearers will be Raymond Ringson Herrington, Jr., Dustin Smith, Travis Smith, Caleb Smith, Cameron Jones, Michael Davis, John Montgomery and Ben Carruth. Honorary pallbearers will be Pat Allen, Mickey Merchant, Jerry Brown, Don James, Jerry Forrester, Jerry Blacklaw, Mac Spann, George Bokas and Rusty Smith. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of the Gulf Breeze Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 130, Gulf Breeze, FL 32562.
