Sydney Earl Mix Jr. died peacefully at a care facility in Gulf Breeze on Saturday, October 26, 2013 from complications of cancer. Syd was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. He joined the Navy in 1943, serving as aviation ordnance man during WWII. He graduated from LSU in 1950 as a petroleum engineer and worked in the oil industry in Arkansas before moving to Gulf Breeze in 1956. He sold life insurance for many years before working with the US Army Corps of Engineers at Pensacola Naval Air Station until he retired. Syd is remembered most for his unfailing optimism and determination to live his life to the fullest in the face of adversity. He shared his sense of adventure and love of nature with those who knew him. He was a loving, caring father and husband. He was our rock. Syd is survived by his wife Frances T. Mix and his four children, Gary, Leslie, Merryl and Kelly; two stepchildren, Risa Doria and Gary Shuler. Syd also leaves behind six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Rose Lawn Funeral Home in Gulf Breeze on Friday, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m.
