Shirley Johnson

Shirley Ann Griffin Johnson, 84, of Gulf Breeze, Florida passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2012. A beloved mother, grandmother, and wife, she was born in Cleveland, Ohio and attended Flora Stone Mather College for Women at Case Western Reserve University. She was a member of Lakewood E.U.B. church where she sang in the choir and organized and directed the Children's Choir. She was a Charter Member of the Children's Board of Lakewood Hospital and also volunteered at the hospital. The family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1966 and Shirley began her career at Health and Rehabilitative Services retiring as a Management Specialist in 1986. Shirley was past President of P.E.O. chapter CB, a member and volunteer of the Museum of Fine Arts, a past Board Member of the Stuart Society, as well as a volunteer and member of the Florida Symphony Orchestra Guild. She was also a past Board Member of the Child Care Committee, a private organization which established two day care centers for low income working mothers. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, was a former Director of Children's Church, was on the Administrative Board, and was a Lay Witness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman R. Evans. After the death of her second husband, Chester E. Johnson, she moved to Gulf Breeze, Florida. Shirley became a member of Gulf Coast Friends , Red Hat Breezers and volunteered at Gulf Breeze Library. She was a musician, an avid bridge player and a world traveler. She transferred from P.E.O St. Petersburg Chapter CB to Pensacola P.E.O chapter BU. Shirley was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Santa Rosa County. She leaves two children, a daughter, Carol Ann Holyome of Jacksonville, Oregon and a son, James G. Evans of Gulf Breeze; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Rose Lawn Funeral Home in Gulf Breeze. Visitation will occur one hour prior to the service.
