Ruth Desmond , Nana or Nannie, as she was known, a long-time resident of Pensacola Beach was born September 5, 1921, in Woodsville, New Hampshire. The daughter of the late Wilfred J. and Francis D. Larty, she married the late Jeremiah W. Desmond in November 1945. She died peacefully on the 25th day of May 2011 surrounded by her loving daughters. A resident of Pensacola and Pensacola Beach since 1961, "Nana" Ruth Desmond was loved by so many. She served her country in the United States Navy as a Wave in World War II as an Aviation Machinist Mate 3rd Class on the Stearman aircraft and began her life as a military wife moving frequently to naval bases around the country. The family made their way to Pensacola in 1961 and this has been her home. Ruth's greatest achievement is her family of 5 daughters: Judy , Kathy, Mary, Bette and Patty and their offspring. She was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church and worked as a volunteer at Baptist Hospital. Her survivors include her 5 daughters and their spouses - Judy and Bo Painter of Savannah, Ga , Kathy and Doyle Thomas of Cantonment, Fla, Mary and Robert Bairstow of Atlanta, Ga, Bette and Dr. Robert Harriman, of Pensacola Beach, Fla and Patricia Black of Atlanta, Ga. Her grandchildren: William J. Hodde and wife Cristina, PFC Kristin L. Hodde, Mitchell D. Painter and wife Susan, Jennifer Snyder and husband Timothy, Scott Thomas and wife Kimberly, Natalie Pollard and husband Beau, Captain Seth Adam Gulsby and wife Amanda, Meaghan McCord, Elizabeth and Robert Bairstow, Desmond and Preston Black. Her great grandchildren; Katie, Jacqui and William Hodde, Chaz Painter, Ethan Painter, Kendall Painter, Emily Crosslin, Lauren Crosslin, Adam Crosslin, Damien Culver, Andrew Dobson, Roarke Snyder, Tara Snyder Emily and Mollye Thomas, Devan and Brooklyn Coates, Ryleigh Dueling, Colton and Bronson Pollard. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother John Larty and her grandson, John L. Thomas. Visitation will be held at Rose Lawn Funeral Home, 2942 Gulf Breeze Parkway on Monday, May 30, 2011 from 5-7 pm with Rosary at 4:45 pm. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at 10:00 am at Our Lady Of the Assumption, 920 Via de Luna, Pensacola Beach, Fl, A reception will follow. Internment will be at Barrancas National Cemetery at U.S. Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida, at 1 pm.
