Robert Sutherland

Robert Samuel "Bob" Sutherland, age 85, of Gulf Breeze, FL, died peacefully at his home Monday, January 5, 2009, after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. Bob was born August 10, 1923 in Walnut, KS, and was raised in Southern California. He had been a resident of Gulf Breeze since 1959. Bob attended the University of Southern California, the University of California Los Angeles, and Graceland College, Lamoni, IA, where he met Juanita "Nita" Hunker. They married in 1944 and had 3 children. He was a life-long member of the Community of Christ Church (formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). Bob served in the Navy as a Naval Aviator from 1942 until his retirement as a Commander in 1970. He flew over 24 different types of aircraft (of which the F4U Corsair was his favorite), accumulated more than 5,000 flight hours, and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was Commanding Officer Tactical Air Control Squadron Twenty One, Little Creek, VA, and had also been Aviation Safety Officer for the Naval Air Basic Training Command, NAS Pensacola, FL. Upon his retirement from the Navy, Bob worked as Vice President and General Manager at Bobby Likis Car Care Clinic, where he indulged his love of cars. He retired for the second time in 1985. Survivors include his wife of 64 years Juanita Sutherland, son Stephen E. (Dawne) Sutherland of Pensacola, FL, two daughters, Lorna L. (Buzz) Broughton, of Green Cove Springs, FL and Lorena C. (Dan) Luellen of Bethany, MO, and one brother, Doyle L. (Gayle) Sutherland of Deltaville, VA. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Hubert L. "Trey" Broughton III, Robert B. (Jerri) Sutherland, Erin R. (Robert) Jackson, Eric K. Sutherland, Daniel R. (Angela) Luellen, Holly E. (Iain) McPhail, Tyler R. Luellen, and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 11, at Rose Lawn Funeral Home, 2942 Gulf Breeze Pkwy., Gulf Breeze, FL. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. until services begin at 3:00 p.m. The Interment Services with full military honors will take place at 12:30 p.m. Monday, January 12, at Barrancas National Cemetery. The procession for the Interment will depart Rose Lawn Funeral Home at 11:45 a.m. Honorary Pall Bearers are Buzz Broughton, Dan Luellen, Don Richards, Ron Zahm, Frank Sadro, Joe Alford, Buddy Jackson, Lee Reynolds, Blair Laughlin, Larry Bova, Tom Bosworth, Lew Smith, John Childers and John Farill. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made in memory of Robert S. Sutherland to Covenant Hospice, 2001 N. Palafox St., Pensacola, FL 32501 and to the Haven of Our Lady of Peace, 1900 Summit Blvd., Pensacola, FL 32503, attn. Gayle. Grateful thanks to Hospice and the Haven for their competent and compassionate care of our beloved husband, father and grandfather.
