The youngest of 4 siblings, he joined the Navy at 17 years of age and served in WWII for two years with honorable discharge as Quartermaster Second class. He was a plank holder of the Fletcher Class Destroyer USS Preston. After his military service, he went back to Grand Junction, CO to be with his mother and attended what is now Colorado Mesa University on the GI Bill. While in school, he met and married Verna Mae Dobbins to whom he was happily married for 62 years. After completing his BA he received his masters at Drake University and finished his education with a doctorate at Eastman School of Music. In 1963 he accepted a post as Professor of Music at Pensacola Junior College. During his years at PJC, he also served as Humanities Department Head as well as Conductor of the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra. He is survived by his two sons, Richard Douglas Whitmore & Theodore Stanley Whitmore; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Whitmore; and many nieces and nephews: Ray, Terry & Kevin Chesney, Sue Whitmore Klessons, Jerry Whitmore, Martha Whitmore Higgins and Jean Whitmore Higgins. He will be remembered by his family and large circle of friends with whom he regularly corresponded. If wealth is measured in friendship, this was a wealthy man indeed. A Memorial Service will be held at Rose Lawn Funeral Home of Gulf Breeze, Friday, August 10th at 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior.
