Richard ("Dick") Wallace Haines II ("Coach") died June 4, 2018 at the age of 83.
He was preceded in death by his father-Richard Wallace Haines, mother-Frances Virginia Holiday Haines, wife-Sarah Ann DeWeese Haines, and brother-William Custer Haines.
He is survived by his sister-Mary Haines Baldridge (William), son-Richard Wallace Haines III (Toni), daughter-Sarah Haines Ellis, five grandchildren- Aris Greene (Jared), Rana Neshyba (Garrett), Lauren Fairey Gibbs, Everett Ellis, Devan Ellis, and six great-grandchildren.
Born August 27, 1934 in Oskaloosa, IA, Richard served a distinctive career as a Fighter Pilot in the United States Navy - flying 300 combat missions in Viet Nam. Following his decorated military career, Richard spent 18 years with the Escambia County School District as an American History teacher, football coach, and dean of students. Described by colleagues as, "A Teddy Bear who cared for his students and players," he was extremely dedicated to making history come to life in his classroom and instilling excellence of character into each of his students. Richard had a passion for his country, community, and family, and he greatly influenced them all.
In lieu of flowers, donations to veteran's charities, such as The Gary Sinise Foundation or Wounded Warrior Project, are deeply appreciated.
Memorial Service will be held 9:30 AM, Monday, June 25th, at Rose Lawn Funeral Home, 2942 Gulf Breeze Pkwy, Gulf Breeze, FL 32563. Departure from Rose Lawn will be at 10:30 AM, going to Barrancas National Cemetery for service at 11:30 AM with full Military Honors.
