Growing up in San Mateo, Mom finished her education at the College of San Mateo. Marrying soon after, she supported her husband through college at Cal, working and raising her family. Their first two children Richard and Pamela were born in Berkeley and son Duane followed a couple of years later with the family now in Hayward.
