Meriel M. Schooley, 97, passed away peacefully on the morning of April 24, 2013 at her home in Gulf Breeze surrounded by her family and close friends. She was born in Watertown, South Dakota on March 30, 1916, the daughter of George and Grace Vestrem. Meriel had been a resident of Gulf Breeze since 1990 and an active member of the Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church. She was involved in many community organizations including the Circle of Friends, Red Hat Society, Gulf Coast Friends, bridge clubs, and book clubs. She remained active in the community until just weeks before her death. Meriel was preceded in death by her husband Allen Schooley, daughter Jean Freeman, and two brothers Dean and Charles Vestrem. She is survived by her son Robert (Eileen) Schooley of Gulf Breeze ; daughter Mary Schooley of Washington, DC; three grandchildren, Scott Schooley of Gulf Breeze, Alexandria Freeman of Phoenix, Arizona and Zachery (Daisy) Freeman of Houston Texas. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Schooley, Cathrine Beckwith, Adrianna Beckwith, Liam Beckworth, Audrey Freeman, Franklin Freeman, and one great- great- grandchild, Alivia Colomb. Meriel's surviving children wish to express their appreciation to Covenant Hospice and her friend and neighbor Vicky and daughter Courtney for the loving care and assistance through her illness and death and to her many friends who visited during her illness. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church.
