Mazie Hales

Mazie F Hales passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2013, 10:00 AM at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Mildred Douglass Freeman and James Monroe Freeman of Chesterfield, SC and her sister Veda Freeman Watson of Kinston, NC. Survivors include her husband of 56 years James Marion Hales of Pensacola, FL, her sisters, Sarah Ann Freeman Sims of Sumter, SC and her daughters, Diane and Kay; and Mary Sue Freeman of Gulf Breeze, FL, nieces Linda Watson Hicks and her husband Tom of Amarillo, TX, and Susan Watson of Raleigh, NC, great-nephew, Brian Hicks and wife Paula, Ryan & Chase Hicks, great-nieces, Kelly Hicks Drees and husband Ryan, and Aniston Drees, all of Amarillo, TX. Mazie was very much loved by her Connecticut family which consists of her sister-in-law, Juanita Miller, brother-in-law, Kermit (Joe) Miller, nephews, Glen, Kevin and Bruce Miller, and their families. Mazie graduated from Chesterfield High School then went to nursing school in Columbia, SC where she received her RN Degree. She started working at East Carolina College Infirmary as a nurse where she met her husband to be of fifty-six years. They were married on May 19, 1956. After Jim finished college they moved to Manahawkin, NJ where Jim was a teacher and Mazie was a nurse. They lived in NJ for ten years and then moved to Pensacola. Moving to Pensacola in 1960, Mazie worked at Monsanto, Baptist Hospital and Pensacola Naval Hospital where she retired from in 1995. While working at the Naval Hospital she received her Nurse Practitioner Degree while working in the OBGYN Department. She was presented the Meritorious Civilian Service Award by the Secretary of the Navy while working as a Nurse Practitioner from July 01, 1969 to August 13, 1995. Mazie was the first Nurse Practitioner to independently perform a Dysplasia Clinic at Naval Hospital Pensacola. Her caring efforts, attention to medical and nursing students and a talented educator, Mrs. Hales supported many Family Practice Interns, Residents and staff Physicians enhancing their career development through her guidance. Her contribution to the Command is a direct result of twenty-six years of substantial exceptional clinical expertise, professional motivation and support to the United States Naval Service. Mrs. Hales' loyal dedication to duty and her actions reflect great credit upon herself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Navy. Jim would like to thank the doctors, nurses and helpers at Baptist Hospital for the loving care given to Mazie during her stay. To our "family" at Azalea Trace and all our friends, "Thank You" for your prayers, phone calls, cards, visits and love. The family will receive friends at the Pleitz Chapel at First Baptist Church of Pensacola, 500 N Palafox Street, on Thursday, February 14, 2013 from 1 to 2:00 PM, Funeral Services will be at 2:00 PM and a committal will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery in Gulf Breeze, FL.
