Maxine Howe

MAXINE GREEN HOWE 1911-2010 Maxine Howe, a resident of Gulf Breeze , died Thursday October 7. She was born the daughter of Jack S. and Ruth Hodges Green in Rowlesburg, WV. After completing nurses' training at Memorial Hospital in Cumberland, MD, she married Ormond W. "Red" Howe in 1931, and became a homemaker and PTA mom. They moved to Gulf Breeze, FL in 1955 and shortly after opened Howe Hardware and Sporting Goods Stores at Gulf Breeze and Pensacola Beach, serving as owners and managers until their retirement. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, O.W. Howe, her daughter Sue Howe Ives, a brother Jack Eugene Green and sisters Geraldine Doolan and Norma Hahne. Surviving family are son Lynn A. Howe of Gulf Breeze, daughter Dr. Dolores "Pat" Howe of Pensacola Beach, granddaughter Page Ives Lemel (Mark) of Brevard, NC, grandson A. Bradley Ives (Debra) of Chapel Hill, NC, and nephew Gary Hahne (Chris) of Williamsport, MD. She was fortunate and enjoyed very much being "GreatMama" to her five great-grandchildren, Catherine Lemel, Hannah Lemel, Sam Lemel, Lawton Ives and Emily Ives, all of North Carolina. The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Anita Westafer and her wonderful staff for the royal treatment they afforded Maxine over many years; also, a special thank you to the thoughtful and caring ICU staff of Gulf Breeze Baptist Hospital. Maxine was a member of the Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. A memorial service is scheduled at the church chapel October 16 at 1:00 pm, followed by a reception. A private burial will be at Rose Lawn Cemetery, Gulf Breeze. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, 75 Fairpoint Drive, Gulf Breeze, FL 32561, or to the Maxine and Ormond Howe Family Scholarship, University of West Florida Foundation, 11000 University Parkway, Pensacola, FL 32514.
