Maurice Phillips

Maurice Eugene Phillips, 66, of Gulf Breeze, passed away at home on December 31, 2008. He was born July 14, 1942, in Grenada, MS. He attended school in Gore Springs and graduated from Rolling Fork High School in 1960. He attended Delta State Community College and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, MS. He had a 32 year career with the National Park Service. He worked as a park ranger in Big Bend National Park, TX; Lake Mead National Recreation Area, NV; Cumberland Island National Seashore, GA; Great Smokey Mountains National Park, NC and TN; and Natchez Trace Parkway, TN and MS. He retired in 1998 as Chief Ranger of Gulf Islands National Seashore. He is preceded in death by his parents, Maurice Phillips, Sr. and DeLois Phillips, and his brother, Lynn Phillips. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Bonnie Phillips; his daughter and son-in-law Sara and Karl Fenner, Gulf Breeze; two beautiful granddaughters, Victoria and Sophia Fenner, Gulf Breeze; his daughter, Melinda Phillips, Pensacola; his mother-in-law, Alice Wagner, Cadott, WI; a sister-in-law, Cindy Wagner, Milwaukee, WI; a sister-in-law and her husband, Janet and Wendell Uutala, Ladysmith, WI; a special cousin, Ann Evans, Grenada, MS; and an uncle and his wife Donald and Sue Phillips, Brandon, MS; and an aunt Ethelda Nail, Tupelo, MS. Visitation will be held at Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, 75 Fairpoint Drive, Gulf Breeze, FL, on Sunday, January 4, 2009, from 1:30-2:00 PM with the service immediately following at 2:00 PM In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity or Employees and Alumni Association of the National Park Service, George B. Hartzog, Jr. Educational Loan Program, 470 Maryland Dr, Suite 1, Fort Washington, PA 19034.
