Maude DeRamus, much loved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend passed away peacefully at home in Gulf Breeze, Florida, on Monday, June 15, with her daughters present. She lived a full, active life, leaving behind for her family a beautiful legacy of faith and trust in God; love, enjoyment and encouragement of family and friends, a strong work ethic and a positive outlook on life. She was a wonderful Christian role model for her daughters. Maude's interesting background included serving as Postmaster in Booth, AL, operating a grocery store, serving on the state board of the Rural Electric Association, running the parts department at Gillespie Chevrolet, serving as treasurer and Sunday School teacher at the First United Methodist Church of Prattville, being active in the Women's Society of Christian Service (now United Methodist Women), participating and acting as treasurer for the Service League, using her financial expertise to secure a position at the Citizen's Bank of Prattville where she was eventually promoted to Vice President. She was definitely a woman ahead of her time. In 1936 Maude married the love of her life, Samuel Adams DeRamus (Sam). They raised two daughters, Sandra and Lynn, and spent the next 52 years together until Sam's death in 1988. Maude's adventurous spirit took her to Alaska and Europe. Her stories of these travels are family legend. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Inez Gillespie, siblings Ruth Lynn French, Charles Gillespie, Jeanne Moncrief and nephew Samuel Hollie (Nubbins) Moncrief. She leaves behind to cherish her memory daughters Sandra Brubaker (Barry), Frances Lynn Weldon (widow of Don Weldon) of Gulf Breeze, Florida; grandchildren Todd Brubaker (Gretchen), Laura Colston both of Gulf Breeze and Michele Fassbender of Hendersonville, TN; great-grandchildren Magen and T.J. Brubaker, Alex and Adam Colston and Sam Fassbender who are all so grateful to have had the opportunity to share time with her, enjoy her and love her. Maude loved her nieces and nephews and was an active part of their lives as they were growing up. These include brother Charles sons, Wilson, Gene and James Gillespie as well as her sister Jeanne's daughter Lori Williams and son Whit Moncrief. As per her wishes, she will be cremated and have a private family burial at the Booth AL cemetery. The family will receive visitors on Friday, June 26, from 4;00 until 5:30 at the Chapel of the Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, on Fairpoint in Gulf Breeze FL and on Sunday, June 28, from 3:00 until 4:30 at Ridout's Funeral Home in Prattville, AL. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Maude's memory to the charity of choice, Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church Senior Ministries or Gulf Breeze United Methodist Women.
