Mary Mulroy

February 19, 1926 — March 24, 2025

Gulf Breeze, FL

Mary M. Mulroy died peacefully of natural causes on Monday, Mar. 24, 2025 in Gulf Breeze, FL. She was 99.

She was born Mary Margaret Burke in Scranton, Pennsylvania on Feb. 19, 1926, the daughter of John Burke, a railroad worker, and Elizabeth Rush Burke, a housewife. When she was a teenager, her family moved to Brooklyn, NY, where she lived for 38 years. There she met and married Thomas J. Mulroy, who worked his way up from telephone lineman to management in the New York Telephone Company. In Brooklyn she worked a series of clerical and retail jobs in banks and Macy’s, and raised three boys, Thomas, Robert, and Steven.

In 1978 Mary and her family moved to Gulf Breeze, FL, where her husband worked for Southern Bell. She adapted to her new home, making many friends and taking care of her pet cats. She was as comfortable in a large celebratory setting as she was one-on-one talking to someone about their troubles over a cup of tea. After her husband passed away in 1998, she continued to live on her own in the same Gulf Breeze home, living independently until almost age 98, when she moved into a Gulf Breeze assisted living facility.

Mary loved to sing, especially with her grandchildren; to cook, especially for a crowd; and to solve crossword puzzles, especially with her sons. She and her husband were smooth on the dance floor. Above all, she had a cheerful, easygoing demeanor which bred devotion in her many friends, and accolades about how ‘sweet’ she was from those who had dealings with her. All who knew her will miss her greatly.

She is survived by her sons, Thomas (Elaine), Robert, and Steven (Amy); her grandchildren, Mary Mulroy, Quinn Mulroy, and Molly Mulroy Amarir; and great-grandson, Anir Amarir.

There will be visitation in Gulf Breeze Sunday, Mar. 30, 2025, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Rose Lawn Funeral Home, 2942 Gulf Breeze Pkwy. Her funeral the next day will be at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Gulf Breeze on Monday, Mar. 31, at 10 a.m. followed by a gravesite internment at the Rose Lawn cemetery. Donations in her name can be made to the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement in Graymoor, NY (www.atonementfriars.org); or the Pensacola Humane Society (www.pensacolahumane.org ).
