King Adolphus McGee Jr. transitioned from this life to his heavenly home on June 14th, 2023. He was 87 years old, born July 21, 1935 in Asheville, NC. He was called Adolphus, by his high school contemporaries, and later known as King, to his New York coworkers and friends, also McGee to some.
He attended the public schools of Asheville. He was drum major of the renowned Stephens Lee High School marching band. He attended Knoxville college and joined the US Army. King spent a short period in California, before moving to New York, a city that he loved. He retired from the Bank of California, which transitioned under different names during his employment. He left New York, to be cared for by his sister, Mary in her home in Navarre, Florida.
King was an artistic person, and loved singing, and dancing. He was an artist and was associated with the Alvin Ailey dance group for many years, and traveled internationally with them many times. He was a dedicated performer with the United Negro College Fund choir and was so proud of having sang backup with Celine Dion.
People that knew him, knew that he was fastidious about his personal appearance and attire. He enjoyed socializing and entertaining people, and was well loved and respected by his long time coworkers, and New York family and friends.
Junior, as his family lovingly called him was preceded in death by his mother, Josephine Butler McGee, and the parents who raised him, Martha and King A McGee Sr. His brother and confidante Kenneth Walden McGee.
Surviving relatives are brother, Raymond S. McGee Sr. (Katie) of Greenville,SC; sister, Mary M. Downes (Oliver) of Navarre FL; two children, son, King A. McGee III of New York; daughter, Maurell L. Cosley ( Arthur) of Sacramento, CA; granddaughter, L'oreal Brewer (Brandon), with great grands, Bellamy and Blake Brewer of England; Grand daughter, Marinthia Turner and great grandson, Kymani Allen; nephews, Ray McGee and Michael McGee of Greenville SC; nieces, Rev. Adriane M. Burgess (Craig) of Columbus Ga, Cherie Pagan (Bob) of Candler NC, Anique M. Sangobowale (John) of Annandale Va. He is lovingly survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. One special friend who was a great resource, and spiritual support for King and Mary, as he made the move to Florida and his last few days, Hyacinth Rocke.
Thanks to Gentiva Hospice, and the doctors from Santa Rosa medical system that provided care for King. Services and interment will be announced at a later time.
