Kathryn Snowden Baldwin, 95, returned to her Heavenly Father on November 14, 2024. She passed peacefully from this world to her eternal home surrounded by her loved ones.
Kathryn was born in Evergreen, Alabama on September 18, 1929 and was the third daughter of five to Neice Belle and Comby Snowden.
She was blessed to be born into a loyal, close and loving family that has loved and served the Lord and His people over the years. She grew up around missionaries that would come south to preach and they stayed in her family home. She was exposed to faith and the love of people as she grew up. Kathryn was a life-long member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Community of Christ).
She attended Evergreen High School where she was active in all school activities and clubs and was a majorette. Upon graduation from High School in 1947, Kathryn left home at the age of 17 to go to Graceland College in Iowa, 1,000 miles from home. She made life-long friends while in college and upon graduation she and a couple of them would move to Independence Missouri for a job and then to Des Moine, Iowa and eventually Mobile, Alabama where she met her future husband, Don Baldwin. She had all these adventures before she was 23 years old.
She met the love of her life, a Navy Cadet on a blind date in Mobile, Alabama. After Don received his “wings of gold” they married on February 6, 1953 and were married for 62 years. Kathryn was a true Steel Magnolia, she delivered their first child, Kaye without Don by her side, as he was aboard ship, flying off an air craft carrier.
Six years later, she carried her own suitcase up the steps of the hospital in Birmingham, Alabama alone, while in labor with Lyn. Don was taking a final in one of his classes in dental school and made it to the hospital just before Lyn was born.
Her children watched Kathryn support her husband, his career, and his ministry without ever complaining about the time he was away from the family.
Kathryn served in her own capacity as well, as Women’s Leader and a leader of the girls group, the Skylarks.
Kathryn was a mighty prayer warrior, she prayed for all and talked to God about everything. She spent her married years as a homemaker and she loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She gave without being asked. She was a faithful, strong-willed woman and she passed that to her daughters, granddaughters and great granddaughter. She gave them the understanding that they could be whatever they wanted or needed to be, with God’s help. She led by example without demeaning her femininity. She was a conservative to the core and loved God and country.
Kathryn was a loyal friend, and like her mother who opened her home and kitchen table to all who wanted a seat, Kathryn opened her home to anyone who desired to come in. Kathryn and Don shared their faith by loving others.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald J. Baldwin, her mother and father, Robert Comby and Neicie Belle Snowden, her husband’s parents Parly P. and Stella Baldwin, sisters Evelyn Snowden Booker (JT) and Betty Ruth Engle Taylor (Harry Engle & Robert Taylor).
She is survived by her daughters Kaye Foster (Patrick), Lyn Baily (Daniel Bourassa), five grandchildren Rachel Bassing (Adam), Sarah Doerr (Tim), Scottie Bailey (Matthew), Candace Rosen (Arthur) and Caroline Bailey, 7 great-grandchildren, Carson Bassing, Danny Doerr, Parker Bassing, Timmy Doerr, Jay Doerr, Manning Rosen and Annabelle Rosen, two sisters Patty Law and Jerolyn McManus (Albert ) a dear friend Glenn Barnes and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
