John Swindell, Jr.

John Pledger Swindell, Jr. 1928 - 2010 John Pledger Swindell joined his Lord on Monday, November 22, after a long, courageous battle with illness. John is preceded in death by his parents, John Swindell Sr. and Ruby Mae Swindell. He is survived by one sister, Juanita Hines Collins, and his beloved wife of 62 years, Naomi Febro Swindell. John grew up in Pensacola and entered the military when he was 17 to serve his Country as an U. S. Army Paratrooper in WWII. He and Naomi married in 1948 and they are the proud parents of seven children. John was affectionately known as the "Barefoot Deacon" and the "Bible Man". His focus in life was helping others and he loved the Lord. John was also a selfless giver. He and Naomi are life-long members of First Baptist Church of Gulf Breeze. He was active in the Gideons as Scripture Chairman. John and Naomi have both been active workers with the Florida Disaster Relief Program, feeding crowds at Ground Zero in N.Y., Katrina in N.O. and various other storm sites. John Loved boating, fishing and water skiing and keeping his family happy. He will be sorely missed by his loved ones, his friends and his church family. John is survived by seven children, thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. His seven children are daughters, Janice Hanks (Ralph) of Panama City, Jeannette Geri (John) of Pensacola and June Collins (Tim) of North Carolina; Sons, Johnnie Swindell of Chicago, IL, Jackie Swindell (Pat) of Gulf Breeze, Jerry Swindell (Wendy) of Arlington, VA and James Swindell of Gulf Breeze. Active Pallbearers will be, Louis Holloway, Dwight Glaze, Col. Al Davis, Bob Davis, David Bush and grandsons, Rip Hanks II, Jason Geri, Jake Swindell, Jessie Howard and Justin Swindell. Honorary pallbearers will be The Gideons. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 23, from 5 to 7pm at Rose Lawn Funeral Home with funeral service being held on Wednesday, November 24, 11am, at Gulf Breeze First Baptist Church.
