John Nye

April 22, 1922 — February 26, 2015

John E Nye was born on April 22, 1922 in Rochester, New York. His parents were the late Judge Olin T. Nye and Ethel Pierce Rawlinson Nye. His early years were spent in Buffalo, NY, moving to Watkins Glen, NY when he was three years old. He was educated in Watkins Glen Schools until the 9th grade, when he was enrolled in Kentucky Military Institute. He graduated from KMI in 1940 and entered Cornell University. He was a member of Kappa Delta Rho while at Cornell. On April 1, 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Infantry, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He returned to the States on December 1, 1943, and married Kay Odell in Seneca Falls, NY on December 23, 1943. John received a Bronze Star for service in the Battle of Attu. Upon his discharge from the U.S. Army, John worked in Canandaigua, NY before returning to complete his education. He graduated from Tri-State University with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a B.S. Administrative Engineering. He worked at AirResearch in Los Angeles, CA and Phoenix, AZ, immediately following college graduation. He then worked for Martin Marietta Aerospace Corp. and Sundstrand Corp. in Denver, CO. John moved to Oak Ridge, TN in 1974 and retired from Lockheed-Martin in April 1987. In Tennessee, he was very active in the American Legion, serving as Post Adjutant and Post Commander, District Commander and Tennessee State Vice-Commander. He also held several offices in the "La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux" (40&8) In his retirement years, John served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Santa Rosa Council on Aging, was a member of the Santa Rosa County Transportation Disadvantaged Coordinating Board, President of the Gulf Breeze Senior Club, Adjutant and Quartermaster of VFW Post 1604, and of District 1, and past officer in American Legion Post 340. He also held various local and state offices in the 40&8. He served as Vice President of the Pensacola Computer Club and was on the Advisory Committee for the Santa Rosa Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). He is survived by his wife, Kay Odell Nye, three children, Mary Kay (Tom) Mansfield of Littleton, CO, David (Rose) Nye, MD of Milton and Daniel (Carrie) Nye of Parker, CO. He leaves behind ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter and nieces, Bonnie Hopkins, and Penny Jacober. A time of visitation will be held at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Gulf Breeze from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Tuesday March 3, 2015. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 AM. Burial will be in Barrancas National Cemetery, with Military Honors at 12:30 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the, VFW or the American Legion.
