John Brooks Comstock of Gulf Breeze, Florida, transitioned from this life on October 21, 2016, at the age of 80 following a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Carolee, daughters Audrey Parker and Linda Comstock, son-in-law Bill Parker, Grandsons Charlie Parker, Jason Parker, and Shane Lewis, and his sisters Jean MacNeil and Carol Ledig. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and John Aldridge Brooks, and a grandson, Ryan Parker. John was born in Oak Park, Illinois, near Chicago on April 22, 1936. He attended Penn State University before joining the US Army in the late 50’s. Following his service in the military based in Europe, he moved with his wife to Newfield, NY, in 1960, and lived there for 36 years. Following a successful career as a Metallurgical Technician at Borg-Warner in Ithaca, NY, he retired early in 1992 and moved to rural Gulf Breeze where he lived the remainder of his life. In retirement, John was very active in his community. Together with his wife, he led a neighborhood effort to clear an area for a neighborhood park now known as "Cyprus Tree Park" which was then turned over to the county. Affectionately called "The Mayor of Midway" by his neighbors, John coordinated an effort to collect aluminum cans to fund baseball equipment for the park. He walked the local streets daily and frequently brought health and safety concerns of his community to the attention of the county. John enjoyed fishing, hunting, and golf in his early years. He gladly embraced modern technology and was an early user of the personal computer, helping elderly friends and family learn to use the internet, email, and online services. He will be missed by many and remembered as a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, neighbor, and friend. Visitation services will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Monday, October 24, 2016 at Rose Lawn Funeral Home of Gulf Breeze. Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at Rose Lawn Funeral Home.
Interment will take place in Rose Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a local hospice organization which provided services to John at the address below. Covenant Care ATTN: Development Department 5041 N 12th Avenue Pensacola, Florida 32504
