John Henry "Jack" Bouffard left behind the pain and suffering and embarked on a flight to eternal rest early Tuesday morning, 7 June 2011. Married in 1954, Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Glenda, a saucy Southern Belle from Alabama. Born in Pittsfield, Mass., 80 years ago, Jack joined the U.S. Army in 1947; assigned to a M.A.S.H unit on Enewetak Atoll, he participated in "Operation Greenhouse," a series of four - "Dog, Easy, George, and Item" - relatively high yield Atomic Bomb tests, which were the fifth American nuclear test series and the first to test principles that would lead to developing thermonuclear weapons (hydrogen bombs). A Korean War veteran, Jack also served in the United States Air Force. After discharge, Jack went to work with IBM machines for Capitol Transit Company in Washington where he met Glenda. Married in 1954, they lived in Washington, where, with his natural ability to solve complex computer problems, Jack went to work with the Department of Defense as programming supervisor. His ingenious knowledge of computers and economics led him to write a paper on those subjects where, in 1960, he predicted the use of electronic fund transfers and credit cards. It became a standing joke when the government wanted Jack to take night classes and earn a degree; when informed that, "computers are new, and the government has expert instructors to teach you," Jack agreed. "I know, those expert instructors work for me during the day," he replied. Jack and Glenda transferred to NAS Pensacola in 1968 and lived in Gulf Breeze before building their East Bay home in 1977; when the service connected lung problems forced Jack to depend on continuous oxygen therapy, he retired in 1987. Glenda died in 2009, and now, Jack has gone, not only to tell her how well their daughter, Kathy Van Lieshout and granddaughters Jessica, and Stacie Lieshout of Catlettsburg, Ky., and his sister, Claire, a Catholic Nun in Washington State are doing, but to bring news of their beloved cat, Miss Kitty."
