James Arthur "Art" Kenniff age 91, passed away in his sleep May 28, 2009. He was born on November 17, 1917 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his father Thomas Joseph Kenniff, his mother Nan Parks Kenniff, his brother Thomas Kenniff, sister Nancy Kenniff Irons, and his wife of 57 years, Gretchen I. Holsey Kenniff. He is survived by his daughter Susan Kenniff, his two sons, Darby and James Kenniff and his four grandchildren Ryan, Kelly, Keith and Collin Kenniff. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in engineering. Art joined the U.S. Navy in 1940 and enjoyed a twenty year career which included serving on the USS Nashville, USS Midway, USS Willliam C. Lawe, and commanded the USS Charles P. Cecil. His shore billets included Reserve Training Center, Inspector General's Office, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He served in Pacific and European Theaters. Upon retirement, he entered into many entrepreneurial ventures which included two boat dealerships, outdoor advertising, antique car trader, computer ribbon manufacturing, and equipment leasing companies. Memorial services will be held at the Azalea Trace Auditorium Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 2:00 PM. Visitation will be held at Roselawn Funeral Home in Gulf Breeze Monday June 1st from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Inurnment with military honors will take place at Barrancas National Cemetery at a later date. The family wishes to thank the Azalea Trace staff for the comfort and care they provided Art during his final days. Also, all the friends and neighbors who offered their help and solace.
