Jackie (Jack) L. Bonney , 75, passed away at home on Monday, January 18. Jack was born and raised in Pensacola. He graduated from Escambia High School in 1963, then attended the University of Florida, where he graduated with honors, earning a Bachelor's of Industrial Engineering. He then earned a Master's of Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University. He was a past member of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers, a Fellow of the American Production and Inventory Control Society, and a member of the Alpha Pi Mu and Sigma Tau Honorary Engineering Societies.
After earning his degrees, Jack began a career in telecommunications, working for AT&T and various subsidiaries from 1968-1998. Throughout his career, he worked for Western Electric in Greensboro, NC, Teletype Corporation in Little Rock, Arkansas, and AT&T Manufacturing in Atlanta, GA. Jack retired from the AT&T family of companies as the Manufacturing Director at Lucent Technologies in Norcross, GA. He worked for several more years as Vice President of Technical Operations at 2C Optics before retiring for good in 2001.
In 2002, he and his wife Shirley returned to their hometown of Pensacola to fulfill a long-time dream to live on the water. During his retirement, Jack enjoyed boating, fishing, gardening, biking, and spending time with family and friends. He was an active member of his community, serving for many years on the Santa Rosa County Zoning Board, and frequently engaged and advocated in processes of local government.
Jack had a truly astonishing breadth of interests and knowledge and was very well versed in a huge array of scientific, technological, and intellectual pursuits. In recent years he was especially interested and focused on ecological and environmental issues and truly believed that we should all strive to be better stewards of the Earth.
Above all, Jack was dedicated to his family. He was a selfless provider, confidant, and source of strength for all who were blessed to know and love him. As a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, his presence will always be missed.
Jack is preceded in death by his parents, Clifton Bonney and Billie Bonney (Miller). He is survived by his wife Shirley (Crosby), sons Steve (Jill), Jeff (Megan), daughter Susan Harmening (Stuart), grandchildren Ashton and Ethan (Steve), and Hudson Adams (Jeff).
A private memorial service is being planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, please direct remembrances to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
