Irene Torrez, age 85, of Gulf Breeze, Florida and long-time resident of Pensacola, Florida passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2011. Irene was born on August 8, 1925 to Joseph Kirby and Julia Sutkaitis in Lawrence, Massachusetts. She graduated from Lawrence High School, attended Business School, and worked as a bookkeeper for the Railroad. She was also a tack-welder during World War II. She met Walter Torrez in Boston at a restaurant. He asked her to dance. She said "Come ask me after I finish my dinner." It was love and they soon married in Mobile Alabama. She was a career housewife and a wonderful and loving mother. Mom also sold Sara Coventry Jewelry and made many good friends through her sales. She loved Bunco, Bingo, and Biloxi. Mom and Dad retired to Pensacola after a Navy life of twenty-six years. She was an avid gardener and especially loved her roses. Survivors include her sister, Diana Choquette of Lawrence, MA, her children Bonnie Brock (Tim Brock), Ronnie Torrez (Suzanne Rodgers), Wendy Williams (Dickie Williams), Donald Torrez (Stasi Torrez), and Melody Brown, her grandchildren Kenny, Jennifer, Nathan, Kasey, Tyler, Torrey, Tanner, Michelle, James, Joshua, and Joanna, and two great grandsons. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Rose Lawn Funeral Home in Gulf Breeze, Florida with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial will be at Barrancas National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hadji Shriner's Hospital Transportation Fund, 800 West Nine Mile Road, Pensacola Florida 32634. Rose Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
