Herbert Van Lundy DVM, age 94, passed away peacefully at home on August 21,
2023. He was a loving, dedicated husband, father and friend . He will be sorely missed by all
who knew him.
Herb was born in Milton Fl. on Nov. 14, 1928 to Elijah Houston Lundy Sr. and Willa
Josephine Leonard Lundy. He was the youngest of 8 children.
He graduated from Allentown High School in 1947 and immediately began his military
service. He served three years in the U.S. Air Force, two of which were spent in Occupational
Forces in Japan.
In 1950, Herb began the requirements to fulfill a decision he made when he was eleven
and that was to become a veterinarian. Herb graduated from the University of Florida in 1954
with a B.S. in Animal Husbandry and Pre-Med, and from the University of Georgia in 1958
with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He received a fellowship to attend Tulane University and
graduated in 1959 with a Masters of Public Health.
After completing his education, Herb served as the county veterinarian for Hamilton
County Fl. There is also where he met his future wife, Gynelle Johnson, a sixth grade teacher
and daughter of a prominent Hamilton County farmer and dairyman who was thrilled to have a
veterinarian in the family. They were married on November 23, 1960 and their son Sam was
born in 1962.
Herb and Gynelle moved to Milton in 1961 and opened the Milton Animal Clinic, which
became a successful veterinary practice for over 30 years.
Herb was an active member of First Baptist Church Milton, Kiwanis Club and Chamber
of Commerce for many years. He was a long term member of AAHA, the American Animal
Hospital Association.
In retirement, Herb enjoyed working with the pecans and blueberries at the family farm.
Herb’s family and friends also very much enjoyed the produce from the farm. He participated
in the Master Gardener program. He spent time at the Sugar Bowl beach house, biking and
sailing. He also became a rather good wood carver during these years. Herb’s hand carved
benches, signs, bird houses and Christmas ornaments are enjoyed by many.
Herb is survived by wife Gynelle of 62 years, son Sam, sister in law Isabel Fuller, and
many loving nieces and nephews.
No service has been planned at this time.
