Elsie Domonkos

December 9, 1915 — July 25, 2009

Elsie Strahler Domonkos, born December 9, 1915 in Manhattan, NY, quietly passed to be with our Lord on Saturday, July 25, 2009 in Pensacola, FL. She was predeceased after 62 years of marriage by her steadfast, faithful husband, Paul Domonkos and sister, Jolan Lombardi. Elsie was raised in New Jersey and married Paul at the age of 24. Together they raised their two daughters Elizabeth and Margaret in Stelton and Spotswood, NJ. In her early single and married life she worked in a shirt factory later becoming a homemaker. When her husband retired from Western Electric Co. in 1970, they moved to Lakeland, FL, where they lived for twenty years, becoming active in the local Hungarian church. There she and her husband did most of the shopping for the monthly church dinner ingredients. Elsie would help prepare and serve the dinners offered following morning worship hour. She also helped make egg noodles, Hungarian sausage, stuffed cabbage, and baked goods that were sold to support the church. She had a beautiful voice and was the lead singer in the church music group. In January 1990, Elsie and Paul moved to Pensacola, FL. Together with their daughter Margaret, they bought a house and the two families moved together to share their lives. In Pensacola, they joined St Luke United Methodist Church and Elsie quickly became active in the Chancel Choir, Amigo's fellowship group, and an active member of the United Methodist Women. Elsie was a loving peace maker who lived her life showing God's love in all she did. She was blessed to see her daughters marry and raise families of their own. Elsie is survived by her daughters and their families: Elizabeth Jolan and husband Donald Walter Chesner and Margaret Jolan and husband Theodore Harold Bowne. Elsie was blessed with: 4 grandchildren Raymond Joseph Bowne, Craig Alan Bowne, Brant Donald Chesner, and Connie Lee Chesner; 5 great-grandchildren Lauren Eaton, Brandon Bowne, Raymond Bowne Jr., Richard Parker, Kristen Bowne, and Andrew Chesner; and 2 great-great-grandchildren Nathaniel Bowne and Layton Jobe. She was also loved by her brother-in-law Frank Barick, nieces Jolan Conan, Marian Milazzo, Barbara Trimble, Marion Tilley and nephew Bradford Barick and their families. Friends and family may call during the visiting hour on Sunday, August 2, 2009, from 2 to 3 p.m. at St Luke United Methodist Church, 1394 E Nine Mile Road, Pensacola, FL. A funeral service will follow the visiting hour with Rev. Jason Adams, Rev. Carolyn Nelson, and Rev. Ted Bowne officiating. There will be no graveside service in Pensacola. Following her cremation, Elsie's ashes will be taken to Franklin Memorial Park in New Jersey for burial beside her husband. Rose Lawn Funeral Home, Gulf Breeze, is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St Luke UMC designated toward the New Church Bus Fund.
