Dr. Mary Lee Wells Whedbee, 83, of Gulf Breeze, FL, passed into heaven in Hospice Covenant Care, Pensacola, FL on Monday, August 7, 2017.
A private family graveside burial service will be held in Greensboro, NC in Greenhill Family Cemetery.
Born in Greensboro, NC to parents Maxton Elliott and Mamie Lee Chandler Wells, Mary Lee graduated from Greensboro High School in 1952. She received her B.S. Degree from Greensboro College, her Master's Degree from Auburn University in Auburn, AL, and her Doctorate Degree from Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. She became a teacher and later a School Counselor for 36 years. She further distinguished herself by continuing her education; receiving many titles; running her own private counseling practice and serving in Prison Ministries.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Gulf Breeze where she was an active member of the Church Choir. As she was faced with various health and personal challenges, numerous efforts were made by her family to persuade her to return to her native North Carolina. However, her love of Gulf Breeze, her many friends, and her activities with her grandson, Chandler, led her to stay.
She is survived by her grandson; Chandler Holden; two sisters, Maxine Wells Overman, and Harriett Wells Sink; one brother, David Elliott Wells (Susan); 11 nieces and nephews; 12 great-nieces and nephews; cousins, and many friends.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, William Whedbee, her sons; Richard Holden and Davis Holden, her parents and one sister, Jane Chandler Wells West.
