Dorothy Pugh

Dorothy (Dot) Sumrall Pugh, 88, a former long-time resident of Gulf Breeze, FL, passed away May 17, 2013, in Valdosta, Ga. A private family service was held at the Rose Lawn Funeral Home on May 21 with her son-in-law, Dr. Fred Downing of Valdosta State University officiating. Burial followed at Rose Lawn Cemetery. Dorothy was born in Fernwood, MS, to Sam and Beulah Sumrall on February 1, 1925. She was raised in Picayune, MS, where she graduated high school and began her secretarial career. She worked over the years as a legal secretary, then for many years she was the Benefits Administrator at Reichold Chemicals in Pensacola. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Gulf Breeze where she taught Sunday School and was active in WMU. After her retirement, Dorothy became an active volunteer at Gulf Breeze Hospital. She was an avid crafter who enjoyed sewing and china painting, but mostly she loved spending time with her family. Mrs. Pugh was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Burvin E. Pugh, Sr., who was the first principal of Gulf Breeze High School; her parents, Sam and Beulah; and her brother, Clyde Sumrall. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Linda (Fred) Downing of Valdosta, and her sons, Burv (Donna) Pugh of Travelers Rest, SC, and Tom (Leslie) Pugh of Fredericksburg, VA. She will also be missed by her grandchildren: Amy (Downing) Punch, Jonathan Downing, Michelle Pugh, Allison (Pugh) Byers, Thomas Pugh and George Pugh, along with great-grandchildren Jake, Tyler and Emma Punch and Hailey Byers.
