Dorothy Jean (Smith) Gilbert, was born in Memphis, Tennessee on February 5, 1928, and went to be with her Lord on November 26, 2021. She lived for 93 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, James Pascal Gilbert, sisters, Rachel Smith Jones, Carol Smith Tedford, her brother Lowrey Smith, and her great-granddaughter Caroline Cobb. Dottie grew up as a pastor's daughter, the oldest of five children. When she was young, her family moved to Mississippi. Dottie attended Clark College, and later Mississippi College, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree. While at Clarke College, she met and married James Gilbert, who would later serve as a pastor in Mississippi. In 1957, James and Dottie were appointed as Southern Baptist missionaries to South America. They spent 25 years in various parts of Ecuador and 10 years in Panama before returning to the United States, where James pastored a church in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, and worked with ethnic missions on the Gulf Coast. After her husband's death in 1998, Dottie moved to Montgomery, Alabama near her oldest daughter, where she taught Spanish and Sunday School. In January of this year, Dottie moved with her daughter to Gulf Breeze, Florida where she spent the remainder of her life. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was faithful to Christ, served her family and her church and left an example for all who knew and loved her. Dorothy Jean Gilbert is survived by her sister, Judy Smith, her two daughters, Jean Gilbert Hicks (Tom), Patricia Gilbert Schryer (Tim), and her son, James Pascal Gilbert, Jr., her grandchildren, Tom Hicks, Jr. (Joy), Bonnie Hicks Cobb (Jeremy), Jennifer Schryer, Stephanie Corey Verkouille (Josh) Sheridan Corey (Kaylee), Scott Corey, Stacia Corey Dials (David), Katie Gilbert Shawver (Drew), James Pascal Gilbert III (Samantha), and Ysabella Gilbert, her great-grandchildren, Sophie, Karlie, Rebekah, David, Hadley, John Thomas, Hannah, Madison, Jackson, Ella Grace, Brody, Christian, Caleb, Dedan, Maya, Davin, Dawson, Obed, Judah, and Isaac, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 1:00pm until the funeral service begins at 2:00pm, on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at Rose Lawn Funeral Home, 2942 Gulf Breeze Parkway, Gulf Breeze, FL 32563. Private interment will be Wednesday, December 01, 2021 at Biloxi National Cemetery. Dr. Tom Hicks, Jr., her grandson, will officiate.
