Donald K. Mitchell, Sr., 83, of Gulf Breeze, Florida passed away on Friday, May 4, 2018.
Born on November 9, 1934 in Ocean Springs, Mississippi to Oscar and Mary Agnes Mitchell, Don spent his formative years in Ocean Springs, graduating from Ocean Springs High School and then furthered his education by graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi. He served as a Chemist with Monsanto and subsequently retired from ECUA having served as their lab manager.
Don and Mattie Hodge married in 1956 and settled in Gulf Breeze in 1972 where they would raise their family.
Don was an avid sailor, and was also passionate about golf, tennis, bike riding and gardening. He accomplished his 4th degree KC, maintained a membership to the American Chemical Society, and was a past Scout Master and a past Council Member at St. Ann's Catholic Church of Gulf Breeze.
Family and friends will remember Don for his generosity, positive attitude, sense of humor and infectious smile.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Mitchell, two sisters and eight brothers, all of whom were from Ocean Springs.
Don is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mattie Mitchell; son Don Mitchell (Betty) of Ft. Myers, FL , son James Mitchell ( Jackie ) of Ft. Myers, FL, daughter Linda Mitchell of Pensacola, FL , grandchildren Jessica (Matt) of Gulf Breeze, FL, Mason of Pensacola, FL and Charlie of Ft. Myers, FL, great-grandchild, John Matthew Peacock of Gulf Breeze, FL, sister Myra Kittle of Ocean Springs, MS, special sister-in-law Connie Hodge of Coffeville, MS as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will begin at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Gulf Breeze. A visitation hour will begin one hour prior to service time. Msgr. Luke Hunt will serve as celebrant.
Serving as pallbearers will be Johnny Mitchell, Ronnie Sanders, David Mitchell, Paul Kittle, Steve Howell, and Frances Mitchell. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Mitchell and the staff of ECUA Laboratory.
