Dr. D. Pat Howe, Vice President Emerita and Associate Professor, Retired, from the University of West Florida died Saturday, December 28, 2024. She was born on October 6, 1932, to Ormond W Howe and Maxine G. Howe, in Cumberland, Maryland. Dr. Howe spent her entire career in education. She taught for the State Department on a United States Air Force Base in France. She taught at North Georgia College and supervised in the Atlanta City School System. Her last position lasted over 30 years and was with the "new" university in Pensacola. She advanced at the university and in 1983, then President James Robinson made Pat one of only two female vice presidents in the Florida State University System. She became Vice President of University Relations at the University of West Florida.
During her long career she was honored with Resolution Number 28-88 by the City Council of the City of Pensacola for her "long and dedicated service to the Community and Citizens of Pensacola and Northwest Florida." This "service" included being a member of the Pensacola-Escambia Development Commission and included serving as secretary from 1985-1987. She was a member of the Saenger Management Board of Directors and served as President of this board from 1985 to 1987. She was a member of the Tiger Bay Board of Directors and of the Private Industry Council. She participated in the United Way Loaned Executive Program among her long and distinguished career. Dr. Howe is survived by her brother, Lynn A Howe of Gulf Breeze; her niece, Page Ives Lemel (husband Mark} of Brevard, North Carolina; her nephew, A. Bradley Ives (wife Debra) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and five great nieces and nephews: Catherine Lemel, Brevard, N.C., Lawton Ives, Denver, Colorado, Emily Ives, London, United Kingdom, Hannah Lemel, Cleveland, Ohio, and Sam Lemel, New York City, NY.
A memorial will be held at Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, 75 Fairpoint Drive, Gulf Breeze, Florida, on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 2:00 PM.
Memorials, should be directed to the Ormond and Maxine Howe Family Endowment at the University of West Florida or the Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church.
