Broward Russ

May 22, 1923 — August 2, 2010

Broward Russ, age 87, was called home August 2, 2010. Mr. Russ was born on May 22, 1923 in Holmes County, Florida and has been a resident of Gulf Breeze for the last 47 years. He proudly served in the U. S. Navy and worked at NAS Pensacola (Civil Service) for 32 years, retiring as supervisor. From NAS he ventured on to be a building contractor for 20 years and then started the 1st flower shop in Gulf Breeze. He was a Mason for over 50 years. Broward loved life and lived it to the fullest. He loved to travel and especially go on trips with friends, family and the girls. He always had great advice to those who ask. Everyone looked forward to the annual fish fry and was known for his fabulous homemade ice cream. He loved to fish, especially with his partner of 65 years & the love of his life. He was a devoted husband. He loved to garden and give away his produce to everyone. Broward put Jesus first and was an active member of Gulf Breeze First Baptist Church for over 30 years. He was an inspiration to those who knew him. He demonstrated daily a great example to go by. Everyone around him benefited from his knowledge and wisdom God gave him. He loved his many nieces and nephews, always wanting what was best for them. It made him happy to know how much they loved him. He had the biggest heart you can imagine, his goodness, his kindness, the rock of our family. He will be missed by all who knew him and our lives will be better because of him. When we think of him it will always bring wonderful memories. Broward was preceded in death by his parents, Allen Claud and Minnie Bell Russ; three brothers Barton H. Russ, Howard Russ and Ralph Wilkerson; two sisters Odie Shedrick and Luvene Galfans. Survivors include his devoted wife of 65 years Imogene Godwin Russ, whom he lovingly called "Doll", his one and only daughter "Bugg" Betty Jean Coleman who believed her daddy could do anything and was the best daddy always. His only grandson "Buddy" Daniel Coleman whom he loved dearly and his only granddaughter "Tambo" Tammy Coleman who was granddaddy's little baby angel who filled his life with joy. He also leaves two sisters Luverne Bowen and Thelma Colvin. Services for Mr. Russ will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, August 6, 2010 at Rose Lawn Funeral Home with Rev. Ralph Morgan, Rev. Henry Willett and Rev. Jeff Spooneybarger officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. A special thanks to Sharon whom he grew to love in a short time and lovingly called "Baby".
