Bernard Michael "Mike" Hart, passed away suddenly at home on Sunday, May 20, 2012. Mike was born on May 26, 1943, in Phelps, New York. On July 30, 1966, he married Alice Lynne Emerson at the Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, Iowa. As a member of the United States Navy, Mike proudly served his country for 22 years, stationed at bases from Iceland to Florida. Upon retirement from the USN as a Senior Chief, Mike worked as a defense contractor managing MILCOM Systems in Pensacola, Florida, for many years. In addition to being a defense contractor, Mike also worked in the telecommunications industry, and, for the past 7 years, Mike worked for Northrup Grumman as a project manager in San Diego. Mike was a devoted husband, and a proud and loving father and grandfather. Mike and Alice were happily married for nearly 46 years. Making the most of their time together, they enjoyed traveling, gardening, and entertaining friends and family. He is survived by his devoted wife and love of his life Alice; his two children, Carrie (Sorrells) and Dean; his son-in-law, Tim Sorrells; his grandchildren, Trey and Haley Sorrells; his brother Jim (Sue) Hart; his sister Sandy (Don) Lyons and numerous loving siblings, in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Mike was preceded in his passing by his mother, Jane Madigan Hart; his father, Bernard Leo Hart; his younger brother, Joe Hart; his mother-in-law, Chris Emerson; and his sister-in-law, Sandy Emerson. In addition to his family and his work, Mike was a gifted artist who lovingly created beautiful pieces of wood art. He also was committed to his community as a member of the Optimist Club and serving as a president of the Gulf Breeze Lions Club, board member of the Gulf Breeze Sports Association, member of the Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church Administrative Board, and GBUMC usher. Additionally, while his children were growing up, Mike volunteered in the community as a t-ball, baseball, and football coach as well as an umpire. His commitment to family, faith, and integrity was evident in every aspect of his life and will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services will be held at Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church on Friday, June 1, 2012, at 11:00am with Dr. Herbert Sadler officiating. Visitation will be held at Rose Lawn Funeral Home on Thursday, May 31st from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and at Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, before the service, from 10:00 to 11:00am. Burial will be at Barrancas National Cemetery on NAS Pensacola at 1:15pm.
