It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alastair “At” Lovat Taylor on Jan. 31, 2023 in Gulf Breeze, FL. Born in Rumford, ME on Jun. 30, 1934, At was the youngest son of Kenneth Austin Taylor and Annie Murray McLeod. He was predeceased by brothers David Fraser Taylor; and Alexander “Sandy” Douglas Taylor.
At grew up in Glens Falls, NY and graduated from Trinity College. After serving in the United States Army, he went to work in the computer industry as a computer programmer. When the United States began its space effort, At moved to Huntsville, AL and worked with Boeing and Lockheed on the space program. He led a team developing the trajectory software for the Apollo missions, culminating in the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. While working, At earned his Masters of Science in Mathematics degree from the University of Alabama. He was an avid University of Alabama football fan and school supporter, becoming a charter member and serving two terms as President of the Northern California Chapter of the University of Alabama Alumni Association.
At had a long career in software development with many startup companies, and well-established firms in the San Francisco Bay Area. He taught Mathematics part time at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose, CA, and after retiring to Florida, he taught at Pensacola College.
He enjoyed college football, backgammon, chess, and reading poetry and philosophy. At was a kind, generous man with an infectious smile, love of life, and a strong work ethic.
A loving father, grandfather, and true friend, he will be dearly missed by all whose lives he touched.
At is survived by sons Jeffrey Taylor of Surprise, AZ; and James (Wendy) Taylor of Livermore, CA; grandchildren; and great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Mar. 15, 2023 at 11 AM at Rose Lawn Funeral Home, Gulf Breeze, FL. Interment will be at Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola, FL.
