Joan Myers

October 6, 1929 — November 21, 2014

Joan Ruth Ziebell Myers was born on October 6, 1929, in Kendallville, Indiana. She was the only child of Clarence and Bernice Ziebell. After graduating from Kendallville High School (class of '47), Joan was active with Tri Kappa, an Indiana women's philanthropic organization. In 1951, she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University, graduating with honors. She taught kindergarten and elementary school for many years. In eighth grade, Joan first met her future husband, John David Myers, when his cousins held her arms so that he could kiss her. They did not see each other again until they were both in college. They were married Christmas Eve of 1952 by John's grandfather, a Methodist minister, and were married for 56 years. They travelled together throughout John's 30 year Navy career, living in Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Illinois, and moving to Pensacola in 1968, where they retired and enjoyed the rest of their lives. Joan was very active with both the Navy Relief Society, where she served as Volunteer Chairman, and the Military Officer's Wives Club. For years, both John and Joan were active members of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Joan served on the Altar Guild, held the offices of President of Women of the Church, Secretary of the Vestry, Co-President of Sunday School, and Episcopal Young Churchmen (EYC) Advisor. Joan was also very active with the Escambia High Band Boosters where she enjoyed interacting with the kids, working in the concessions stand, fundraising for the band and chaperoning football games and band trips. Joan continued her association with the EHS band, when her granddaughters joined The Pride. Joan enjoyed many things - playing the piano and organ, travelling, gardening, and volunteering - but her greatest joy was her family. She loved them dearly and taught them to value education, faith, helping others, and loving one another. Her death leaves a great hole in their lives and in the lives of those who knew her. She is survived by her daughters Jody Kellerman (Keoki) and Janna Wood (Craig - for whom she was a second mother), and four grandchildren Kai and Kii Kellerman and Kelsey and Kayla Wood. A Memorial Service will be held on December 27, 2014 at 10:00 am at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church located at 805 N Blue Angel Highway. Interment will follow at Pensacola Memorial Gardens. Arrangements entrusted to Rose Lawn Funeral Home of Gulf Breeze. You may offer condolences, share memories and sign the guestbook at www.roselawn-fh.com
